Hey chaps,
I'm considering getting a simple CD player installed into the beast. It's still got the factory tape deck and obviously all the old wiring and speakers as the audio experience in the car is pants!!
I do have some brand new speakers ready to be fitted so basically I'm looking for someone who can fit the new unit as well as re-wire it so it sounds crisp and not like a bag of spanners!
Any advice or info would be great, anywhere in Hampshire/Dorset/Berkshire would be super duper!
Cheers.

Re: Installing new CD player/wiring
Your car should have VW's version of the ISO standard wiring. The only difference between that and the wiring for a modern stereo is for the permanent power and the switched power. Most new stereos have the facility to swap the power leads to compensate for this (yellow and red wires). Failing that you can get something like this:

You can also get speaker wire adapters that connect to the factory speaker plug and have spade connectors to go on to the new speakers.

Worth trying yourself as it can be very straightforward. If you really don't fancy it, it's well within the capability of your local Halfords.

Hey,
Thanks for the great advice and the links, the reason I question the current set up is because music sounds distorted, more so on some songs. I managed to connect new speakers in the front but they don't actually sound much better than the 20 odd year ones they replaced?!

You don't say which new speakers you have bought?
You could also have the speaker wires the wrong way round?

Does the music sound distorted from a cassette? If so, I suspect the tape player is on its last legs. If the radio sounds bad, then that could be the stereo, the aerial, earthing, the speaker wiring or the speakers (and maybe some other things too).

Cheers guys,
I think my first port of call will be getting my hands on an old tape to test the sound quality. If its still distorted then at least I know it could then be one of the above :-/
here's a link to the speakers I bought... cheap and cheerful but with an improved stereo and decent wiring surely they'd do for a Sunday drive?! I'm not Snoop Dog...
