mk1 rear fogs

Post by Nate » Sun Jan 26, 2014 6:40 pm

Would the fog lights on my mk1 be a dealer fit option or fitted by a previous owner? I can never remember when they became a requirement.

I'm tidying up the dash loom ready to refit it, and the radio and fog light wiring is awful! Scotchlok and wires twisted together and taped up

Rear fog light became standard in 1980, previously was an optional factory or dealer fit.

My 1978 GLS came without a fog light.
When my brother had the car before me he went out and fitted one

Quote from MOT manual:

"This inspection applies to the one rear fog lamp which is required to be fitted to the centre or offside of vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1980"

So technically, if yours is registered before this, you can get away without one.

I removed the fog light on my '78 as I think it looks a lot cleaner and as mentioned is not legally required, every MOT I've had though they have popped off to the office to check the regulations :-)

Have you just removed the light or does the switch has to be removed as well?

I've removed the switch as well and just have one of the factory blanking plates in the space.

I'm a bit unsure on the legal requirements I think if the light is fitted on the car it has to be working but if you have a switch but no light fitted thats ok.

The fog light harness is usually self-contained and quite easy to remove/install.

as its looking Luke I'm gonna be bumperless for a while due to dwindling funds, my rear fogs are going to be removed. But living I'm the Cotswold water park, fogs are needed, so I'm going to convert the o/s reverse light to become my fog light. Can't decide between fitting a red high power led bulb, or cut the back away and fit a square led fog light unit into the existing lens
